John Charles, The Gentle Giant, is widely believed to be the greatest Welsh football player to have ever lived. Starting his career in Leeds, scoring 155 goals in 316 games, he was transferred to Juventus in Italy, for a then record fee of £65,000. His time in Italy was a successful one, winning three Scudetti in five years as well as two Italian Cup Winners medal. Il Gigante Buono returned home to Wales after his time abroad, playing for Cardiff City and Hereford Town in a playing career that spanned twenty-three years. The respect Charles earned from la Bianconeri was shown when, on the occasion of the club’s centenary in 1997 they voted him to be the best-ever foreign player to play for their team. Charles’ accomplishments with Juventus led to him being voted ‘the greatest foreign player ever in Serie A’, ahead of Maradona, Michel Platini, Marco Van Basten and Zinedine Zidane – this in 1997, 34 years after his last appearance in the league. In 2001, he became the first non-Italian inducted to the Azzurri Hall of Fame.
