Brendan Rodgers: ‘I tried to sign’ Champions League Winner

Liverpool attempted to sign Spanish international Thiago but were beaten to his signature by Bayern Munich, Brendan Rodgers has revealed.

Thiago, a successful graduate of Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth academy, picked up four La Liga titles before making his €25million transfer to German champions Bayern in 2013.

The 25-year-old has been incessantly linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United rumoured to be likely suitors but, in an open admission from former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, it was in fact Liverpool who made a strong move for the midfielder’s signature.

‘I used to often come to see the lower categories of Barca, Nolito was in youth, Soriano in the reserves with Thiago,’ Rodgers, now the manager of Celtic said.

‘I tried to sign Thiago for Liverpool, but could not because he wanted to sign for Bayern.

‘I’ve seen many games of Barca’s youth football and I love how the club works and its values.’
